Health Benefits of Massage

Many kinds of massage provide benefits aside from simple relaxation. Here are just a few of the health issues that may be relieved from massage.

* Headache – Massage therapy can reduce the frequency of migraine attacks a person has and can also improve sleep.

* Back pain – One 2003 study shows it worked better than spinal modification or acupuncture for persistent low back pain. This actually reduces the need for painkillers by 36%!

* Cancer – Used as an aid to traditional type of treatment, otherwise known as Western medicine, massage can promote relaxation and reduce symptoms of cancer or side effects of treatment. It may also help relieve swelling pain, nausea, fatigue, or depression, or even improve the function of your immune system.

* Osteoarthritis – In the first clinical research about the effectiveness of Swedish massage for knee osteoarthritis, participants who had a one-hour massage either one or two times a week had reported relief in stiffness, pain, and overall function. The control group or the other side had no such change.

* Anxiety. More than 12 studies show that massage helps relieve anxiety and depression. It also lowered levels of cortisol (stress hormones) by up to 50%.
