Kidneys are important organs in our body. They remove excess organic molecules from the blood, and it is by this action that their best-known function is performed: the removal of waste products of metabolism.
Kidneys are also essential to the urinary system and also serve homeostatic functions such as the regulation of electrolytes, maintenance of acid–base balance, and regulation of blood pressure (via maintaining the salt and water balance).
They also serve the body as a natural filter of the blood, and remove water-soluble wastes which are diverted to the bladder. In producing urine, the kidneys excrete wastes such as urea and ammonium. They are also responsible for the reabsorption of water, glucose, and amino acids.
The kidneys also produce hormones including calcitriol, erythropoietin, and the enzyme renin, the last of which indirectly acts on the kidney in negative feedback.
Here are 8 Golden Rules in Taking Care of Your Kidneys, according to Dr. Maaliddin Biruar – Nephrology Consultant:
1. Keep fit and active. Exercise for 3 minutes around 3-5 times a week. Aerobic
2. Keep regular control of blood sugar level (for diabetics).
3. Monitor blood pressure.
4. Eat healthy and keep your weight in check.
5. Maintain healthy fluid intake especially in warm weather.
6. Don’t smoke.
7. Don’t take OTC pills, herbal supplements for kidneys. There’s no vitamin for kidneys.
8. Get kidney function checked. Be aware of risk factors. Have an annual regular check up.
